Turning Africa's Agricultural Breakthroughs into Productivity Gains

School meals are the largest safety net for children in the world, and a coordinated, well-financed effort can extend them to the millions who still go without.

Baobab Impact was engaged to lead the design of the Planet-Friendly School Meals Big Bet, a new initiative through which a consortium of partners provides technical assistance and catalytic financing to low- and middle-income countries working to expand their school meal programs. School meals are the single largest safety net for children anywhere in the world, now reaching more than 400 million children and returning at least $9 for every $1 invested, yet coverage remains lowest where the need is greatest and a funding gap of around $2 billion still separates today's programs from the most vulnerable children. Baobab Impact ran the co-creation process behind the initiative, built its theory of change, mapped the capabilities needed to strengthen programs across the value chain, and assessed where those capabilities are missing.

The Big Bet gives governments, donors, lenders, and technical partners a shared platform for expanding healthy, home-grown school meals to 100 million more children by 2030 in a way that is planet-friendly and financially sustainable, turning one of the world's most cost-effective investments in children into lasting gains for health, education, and food systems.
