Livestock Trade & Investment

Mobilizing Capital Behind Africa's $200 Billion Livestock Opportunity

Africa's livestock sector is one of the continent's most underleveraged economic assets, and a coordinated investment agenda can change that.

The African Union Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) contracted Baobab Impact to develop a continent-wide investment agenda for African livestock. The sector contributes more than $200 billion a year to the African economy and supports the livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people, yet it is held back by fragmented policy, weak trade infrastructure, gaps in veterinary and extension services, and a chronic shortfall in investment. Baobab Impact built the strategic framework underpinning the agenda, identified the priority reforms and investments needed across the value chain, and structured a credible case for binding commitments from donors, national governments, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and the private sector.

The agenda gives stakeholders a coordinated platform for aligning resources, policy reforms, and market development behind a more productive and competitive African livestock sector, and for translating its $200 billion contribution into broader prosperity across the continent.
